Enrollment Trends

Source: U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, 2000-2012 National Postsecondary Student Aid Studies

These two charts provide an understanding of enrollment trends for first generation students. The first chart highlights the number of first generation students following the federal government’s definition. The second chart highlights the number of first generation students using a stricter definition of the term, looking at only students who parents have not had any college education.  Please see the note below for further commentary.

NOTE: These figures come from ALL undergraduate surveyed, which may not accurately reflect numbers of students actually enrolled or number of students enrolled in composition courses. These numbers come from all students receiving financial aid, through any type of institution: public, private, 4-year, 2-year, not-for-profit, and for-profit. This is likely an elevated number, due to the full type of institution included in the survey. The actual number of enrolled first generation students is likely closer to 25-30%, per research that looks at multiple data sets for comparison.
